Open Destinations goes green

January 2008

In response to requests from customers Open Destinations have launched a new feature in their tour operation reservation system, Travel Studio, which allows them to add a carbon tax to clients' bookings.

Comments Sales and Marketing Director Steve Lowe: "Initiatives such as the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards demonstrate how seriously the leading players in our industry are treating this issue. As well as wanting to safeguard the planet, operators are becoming increasingly concerned about also being perceived as environmentally friendly. We have responded to this by ensuring Travel Studio has the flexibility to charge a carbon tax."

Tour operators choose if and how they want to implement the carbon tax. It can be configured as a default charge, meaning that the client must opt out if they do not wish to pay. The charge can be varied dependent on destination and therefore length of flight. The amount will be visible to the reservation person at the point of sale and the confirmation to the client will specify the charge, and can also include any recognised logo to show that they are travelling ‘carbon free'."

The carbon tax feature within Travel Studio can be viewed by attendees at next weeks Travel Technology Show at Earls Court where Open Destinations are at stand B33.
