Online Travel 2.0: It’s All About Relationships

Online Travel 2.0: It’s All About Relationships

The old general store. It was all about swapping stories and addressing issues facing the community. It was so much more than just “getting in and getting out” with the right product.

But digital seems to have effectively killed that. By enabling people to shop and buy without ever seeing another human face, digital has dehumanized what truly differentiates one business from another—their relationships to people, potential prospects, and customers.

Online travel is no exception. Through fancy features and powerful online tools, they have enabled people to book the vacation of their dreams without so much as getting a single question answered. Only competing on features and tools is a lose/lose situation. The travel site loses the opportunity to create a stick, lasting relationship and the user loses out on valuable information (from other users) to help them make a decision. It’s online travel 1.0.

The next generation of travel sites like tripadvisor.com (which, according to eBiz, is the most popular trip site ), re-humanize online travel by integrating reviews, user-generated content, social media, and other materials into the decision-making and selection process. They have created a vibrant community that brings back the feeling of the general store—a place to develop and cultivate relationships.

This presentation explores how these “online travel 2.0” sites are reshaping the industry by translating the 9 characteristics of relationship building through digital technologies like communities, social media, video, and user-generated content. Attendees will:

•    Learn how the next generation of web experiences are all about relationships
•    Assess their technology strategy in light of current trends in the travel industry
•    Examine how effectively they are using digital technologies to develop and cultivate relationships
•    Identify innovative and unique ways to utilize digital technologies to develop relationships

Andy Hampshaw

Managing Director

The Appointment Group

Andy Hampshaw  has worked in the travel industry since leaving school at 18, save for a two year break in his mid 20’s when he pampered to the has been’s and never will be’s of the music industry.  He started as a Junior Travel Clerk selling package holidays to the general public in a High Street Travel Agency.   He is now Managing Director of The Appointment Group, which he joined in the capacity of Senior Travel Consultant in 1991. The Appointment Group is one of the most successful independent travel companies operating in the UK today.

The company covers every aspect of the travel industry, including corporate business travel, luxury leisure travel, meeting and events and niche markets such as music and entertainment travel.  In the intensely challenging economic environment of the last few years The Appointment Group has seen growth of 70% since 2009. Over the last few years The Appointment Group has taken this uniquely all inclusive service to the U.S., opening offices in New York and Los Angeles with equal success.  In January 2013 The Appointment Group further extended its international operations when it opened in Melbourne a project which was driven and managed by Andy Hampshaw.

Andy sits on a number of travel industry and B2B Strategic Groups, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise in all areas of the corporate and leisure travel industries.
